European Study Groups with Industry 130

4-8 September 2017

Organising committee - Martine Barons, Ed Brambley, Colm Connaughton, Simon French, Matteo Icardi, Robert MacKay (chair), Florian Theil, David Wood

Across a 5-day workshop, the European Study Groups with Industry brings mathematicians and industrialists together to work side-by-side to solve real and important issues that companies are facing today.

Concept

The aim of the study groups is to allow industrialists to present selected problems and ask a group of mathematicians to work on these problems for a week.

"Industrialists" and "Companies" include any people and organisations with real-world problems in whose solution mathematics could play a role, thus extend from Manufacturing to Finance, Retail, Biomedical, Government departments and Public services, for example.

"Mathematicians" includes Statisticians, Probabilists, Operational Researchers, Computer Scientists, Engineers, and Physicists, as well as both "pure" and "applied" mathematicians.

While full solutions are not always found in such a short time, the study group always makes very good progress towards finding a solution, often leading to further collaborations between the parties involved.

The study group is an ideal forum in which to have a brain-storming session involving mathematicians with wide ranges of expertise and who can cast fresh eyes on problems completely new to them.

The outcome of the study group is delivered through a presentation on the last day, followed by a written report for each problem a few weeks after the event.
