Dr. Khurom Kiyani

I am a senior research fellow currently working at the Laboratoire de Physique des Plasmas at the Ecole Polytechnique, and as an Associate Fellow (visiting scientist) at the University of Warwick. Much of my current research focuses on statistical signal processing and data analysis of large complex data sets to shed light on the workings of dynamical systems both in the natural and social setting.

My work is interdisciplinary and the four areas of research that I currently focus on are (see research themes for more details):

  • Astrophysical plasma turbulence
    • The investigation of anisotropic astrophysical plasma turbulence from multispacecraft, multi-instrument observations in the near-Earth solar wind. The transition from kinetic to fluid descriptions of collisionless plasmas through Hall-magnetohydrodynamics;
  • Human Crowd dynamics
    • Hardware accelerated optical flow, multiple camera stereo vision, data fusion and novel computer vision algorithms for the study of densely populated human crowd dynamics;
  • Statistical data analysis
    • Scale-invariant stochastic processes. Stationarity testing and dealing with non-stationary signals. Wavelet methods; especially the Discrete Wavelet Transform and it's variants (Wavelet Packet and Undecimated/Stationary translation-invariant Wavelet Transforms).
  • Econometrics and scaling laws
    • Statistical scale-invariance and scaling laws for the study of robust stylised facts in highly non-Gaussian data sets from high-frequency foreign exchange markets.
