The increasing religious diversity throughout the United Kingdom provides both a major challenge and an opportunity for the future of society. The media commenting on recent local and international events and trends have given religious difference and divisions a high public profile. There is a growing recognition at government level that religion cannot be relegated to the private sphere and that teaching school students about religious diversity in religious education and citizenship lessons can contribute to community cohesion. Before this project, little research had been done on students’ own attitudes towards religious diversity or the factors influencing their formation.

The project team worked with secondary school pupils between the ages of 13 - 16, from a variety of socio-economic, cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds and gathered extensive quantitative and qualitative data which enabled them to explore and understand people’s experiences of and perspectives on religious diversity.

The findings of the study have now been published in a book by Dr Elisabeth Arweck and Curriculum Resources have been developed on the basis of these findings, in association with the St Mary's and St Giles Centre. These findings will make a positive contribution to Religious Education, both in the school and in the community context.

This exciting event on the 24th January, in the iconic and historic Coventry Cathedral, will bring the findings from the project and their practical application in the classroom to the attention of fellow researchers, education practitioners and faith communities. All are welcome to attend.
