Professor Mark P Taylor: A Short Biography

Mark Taylor is a leading international authority in open economy macroeconomics and international finance. He is Professor of International Finance and Macroeconomics at Warwick and a Managing Director of Barclays Global Investors (BGI). Previously a Fellow of University College, Oxford, he has also held chairs at Cass Business School, at Liverpool University and at Dundee University, and has been a Visiting Professor at New York University. He was also a Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund, Washington DC, for five years and an Economist at the Bank of England, and began his career as a foreign exchange dealer in the City of London. Although his research interests are broad, he has a particular interest in empirical work on exchange rates and has made a number of important contributions in this area. He has most recently published work on the presence of nonlinearity in real and nominal exchange rate movements, on the long-run behaviour of real exchange rates, on the nature and effectiveness of official foreign exchange market intervention and on the microstructural effects of European Central Bank interest rate announcements.

Mark Taylor's work has been published in leading journals including the Journal of Political Economy, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of International Economics, the Journal of Economic Literature, the Journal of Development Economics, the Journal of Business, the Journal of International Money and Finance, the Economic Journal, Economica and many others. His work has been and continues to be highly influential: in a recent study published in the Journal of the European Economics Association, Professor Taylor was ranked fiftieth in the world and second in the UK according to the number of citations to his work during the 1990s, and he retains this high world-wide ranking on a constantly updated basis. As recorded on the IDEAS webpage, http//:ideas.repec.org/, for example, he is ranked among the top one percent of economists according to a range of criteria such as citations, quality of publications, etc. Over the period 1999-2004, Mark Taylor directed a £5 million macroeconomics research programme for the Economic and Social Research Council.

Professor Taylor also has a strong background in the application of research: in addition to acting as Special Economic Adviser to two cabinet members of the UK Government, he has also acted as an adviser to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Bank of England, and various private financial firms. At Barclays Global Investors he works on international asset allocation based on macroeconomic analysis.

He completed his first degree at Oxford University and also holds MSc and PhD degrees in economics from London University. His recreations include theoretical and practical horology (an expert on English antique clocks), languages (French, Spanish and Russian), and literature. He also holds a Master's degree in English literature from the University of Liverpool.
