John Cunliffe studied at the University of Manchester for a first degree in Politics and Modern History, followed by a Ph.D. on the political thought of Marx and Engels. He taught legal and political theory at the University of Central England before joing PAIS as Lecturer in Political Theory in 2003. He held the post until 2009, when he was appointed as an Associate Fellow in PAIS .
