- Professor Sir Brian Follett succeeded Dr Brundin as Vice-Chancellor.

Honorary Degrees this year went to: Michael Holroyd, Harry Noble, Professor Mary Douglas, Lord Bullock, Professor Sir Peter Swinerton-Dyer, Evelyn Glennie, Mr. Colin Brummitt and Sir Arthur Vick.

The philosopher Jacques Derrida delivered a lecture at Warwick entitled ‘Spectres of Marx: The State of Debt, the Work of Mourning and the New International'.
- The new home for the archives of the Modern Records Centre and BP was opened in the Library extension. It was officially opened by the British Library Board Chairman Sir Anthony Kenny.
- The University’s new teaching centre in Venice was officially opened in the Querini Stampalia.
- The University’s Hillfields Centre was officially opened by the Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality. The purpose of the Centre was to provide education and training for those living in the Hillfields area.

Warwick’s VC presented Dr. Michael Goldstein, the Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, with a remonial mace by Birmingham jewellers Thomas Fattorini, to celebrate Coventry Polytechnic's new university status.
The abstract, almost spiritual nature of McKeever's works stem partly from his religious upbringing and partly from a discomfort with his own body. This discomfort can be overcome through painting where it is possible to step outside of the body and reach the inner self. McKeever says that he senses the forms he is about to paint before he knows exactly what they will look like. This focus on form is clearly displayed in Hour Painting No 10 as the areas of colour do not point the viewer to a single understanding but instead appear to focus the mind and soul on its own path of discovery.
