In this year at Warwick:
- Sir Nicolas Scheele succeeded Sir Ramphal as Chancellor.
- Warwick was selected by the Government to host the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth.

Lord Puttnam visited the University to give a lecture as part of the Speakers’ Corner series run by Warwick, Coventry University and Coventry Cathedral.

The BioMedical Research Institute was officially opened by Lord Wolfson of Marylebone. (The Wolfson Foundation donated £2.5 million towards the Institute and in recognition of this a wing was named after Lord Wolfson). Substantial funding also came from the WPH Charitable Trust and the General Charities of the City of Coventry.

Seven Honorary Degrees were awarded to the following people: Prof. Tim Brighouse, Carol Ann Duffy, Dr. John Howel Jones and Bill Morris, Philip J Lader, Nicholas M Donorio, Declan Donnellan, Colin Thubron and Sir Brian Follett.

Warwick Business School was commissioned by The Footballers’ Further Education & Vocational Training Society Ltd, the FA Premier League, the Football League, the FA and The League Managers Association to provide a programme to develop the management and business skills of footballers who want to become football managers.

Warwick Graduate Timmy Mallett hosted the Big Bash on campus.

Warwick Business School launched the European MBA.

Question Time was held at the Warwick Arts Centre. On the panel were Ann Widdecombe, Terry Pratchett, Brian Wilson MP, Peter Tatchell and Clive James.

The Centre for Lifelong Learning was established.
Simon Patterson's work investigates systems and boxes through which we define and interpret information. He has taken structures such as the periodic table, smoke signals, the routines of air stewards and football formations and used them to present different information and ideas. In Cosmic Wallpaper the constellations have been renamed to provide a history of the rock band Deep Purple.
Patterson emphasises our dependence on language to identify and classify things and make sense of our world. In questioning these categories, he invites us to acknowledge the devices that we may use to condense concepts as wide and vast as the skies themselves.
And in the world:
- The funeral of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother took place in the same year that Queen Elizabeth II's celebrated her Golden Jubilee.
- The Euro became the official currency of twelve of the European Union's Members.
- Kelly Clarkson won the First American Idol Contest.
- The largest Expansion in the History of NATO took place with seven Eastern and Central European Nations being accepted as new members - Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia.
