A snapshot of 2013

In this year at Warwick:

  • A photography competition for staff and students was launched in order to create Warwick’s first diversity calendar. Images had to reflect the diversity of life in and around the University.

  • The new gym opened on campus, containing state of the art training equipment and the top floor of the Sports Centre was redeveloped so that it contained a dance studio and functional training room. The new Lifestyle programme also launched to encourage a healthy lifestyle, with classes at the Sports Centre and Westwood Games Hall.

  • Two University gardeners built a willow house for the University Nursery garden.

  • Professor Nigel Thrift officially opened the Learning Grid Rootes. The Learning Grid Rootes increased the total number of study spaces provided through the Library by over 10%.

  • A team of Warwick staff took part in this year’s UK Corporate Games for the first time. The Games are the largest annual multi-sport festival for businesses and organizations.

  • Alice Oswald won the third Warwick Prize for Writing for her poem 'Memorial'.

  • Mathematics Institute awarded Regius Professorship by the Queen to mark the Diamond Jubilee. The department is among a select group of 12 departments at institutions across the country to be awarded the title.

  • Business Secretary Vince Cable visited WMG to launch a £10 million simulation technology engineering research programme and to see how WMG's research was helping Midlands SMEs.

  • It was announced that ‘The Boar’ has been voted Student Publication of the Year by Ones to Watch (part of the Guardian newspapers student section). This follows being named Student Publication of the Month in Feb 2013.

This portrait was commissioned to celebrate the Chancellorship of Sir Nick Scheele 2003 - 2008. Sir Scheele has played an important role in the management of the motor industry. As former President and Chief Operating Officer for the Ford Motor Company and Chief Executive of Jaguar he improved both productivity and quality. He was knighted in 2001 for his services to British exports.

  • Lance Armstrong admitted to doping in all of his Tour de France wins during his cycling career in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
  • Two bombs are exploded at the Boston Marathon on April 15, killing 3 and injuring 264 people.
  • A garment factory in Bangladesh collapses, killing 1,127 people and injuring another 2,500 people, workers had been ordered to report there despite warnings of building safety from the previous day.

  • Sony releases the Playstation 4 gaming system while Microsoft releases the Xbox One.
