This panel will consider the future of medicine as we look ahead to the next 50 years of the University of Warwick. What challenges will the medical profession face? What will the role of the future doctor be? How will technology alter the nature of health care provision and those people that work within it, and what's the prognosis for the patient?

Andy Hardy
Mr Hardy is immediate past President and a National Board Member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and chair of Arden Local Education Training Council (Member West Midlands Local Education Training Board). He chaired the West Midlands AHSN Development Board and now chairs the West Midlands AHSN Southern Spoke. Mr Hardy is also Chair of Central Newborn Network, a Council Member of the Charted Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, past Chair of the Finance Director’s Group of the Association of United Kingdom University Hospitals. A Director of Right Step, a careers advisory service, and Board Director of Albany Theatre, Coventry.

 

Professor Richard Lilford
Richard has pursued a varied career across university, NHS and government sectors.nResearch methodology has been a unifying theme throughout his evolving career. He has written extensively on Bayesian statistics, research ethics and health economics at the development stage of new treatments and services. Under Richard’s leadership, CLAHRC WM has become the world’s premier group for the methodology of the increasingly popular step wedge cluster design, summarised in a forthcoming BMJ paper.

Professor Sarah Purdy
Sarah is Associate Dean of Social and Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Bristol. Sarah is also a Professor of Primary Care at the University of Bristol. She leads a research programme exploring predictors of, and interventions for, unscheduled care use and avoidable hospital admissions.

Professor Richard Smith CBE
Richard Smith is chair of the board of trustees of icddr,b [formerly the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh], chair of Patients Know Best (a company that brings all medical and social care records together in one place under the control of patients), and chair of the Cochrane Library Oversight Committee.

Until recently he was the director of the UnitedHealth Chronic Disease Initiative, a programme with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute that has created 11 centres in low and middle income countries that research, build capacity, and advise on policy to reduce the burden of NCD.

Professor Ashley Woodcock
Professor Ashley Woodcock is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Manchester, and Clinical Director/ Consultant Physician at the North West Lung Centre, University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Trust. The NW Lung Centre is the largest respiratory unit in the UK, with over 40 Clinical and Academic Respiratory Consultants (with 12 University of Manchester Professors) working together in multidisciplinary teams in 10 regional services.
