About

Julian Gardner was the Foundation Professor of the History of Art. He has been a Research Professor of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome and Distinguished Visiting Professor in Mediaeval Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as a Fellow of the Center for the Advanced Study of the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. He serves, or has served, as a National Committee Member of the Comité Internationale d'Histoire de l'Art and on the governing bodies of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence and the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art in Paris. He publishes widely in international scholarly journals. His books include The Tomb and the Tiara, Oxford 1992 and Patrons, Painters and Saints, Aldershot 1994.

Following his retirement in 2008 he was appointed as an Emeritus Professor in the Department.

In 2014 he was also appointed as an Honorary Professor in the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance where he acts as an advisor to the Director and as a mentor for their postgraduate/doctoral members.
