Decolonizing Voices: Events

As part of our research project, we are running a number of talks, performances, and launches throughout the year. See below for details of forthcoming and past events. In September 2014, we will be holding an international two-day conference, "Long Waves and Global Frequencies: World Literature and Broadcast Culture at the End of Empire". Keynote speakers include Professor Alison Donnell (University of Reading), Dr James Procter (Newcastle University), and Professor Helen Yitah (University of Ghana). Forthcoming Talks and Events:

On Tuesday, June 10th, Dr. Michael Bucknor (UWI Mona), will be giving at talk at the Yesu Persaud Centre entitled "London, Bridgetown and Toronto as Networking Capitals of Black Cultural Production: Revising Caribbean Literary History and Re-routing Black Atlantic Studies" All welcome.

Past Events:


On Thursday, 8th May, 2014, the Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies hosted a one-day symposium on, and the UK launch of, "Love for an Island": The Collected Poems of Phyllis Shand Allfrey. The day featured talks by scholars Lizabeth Paravisini-Gebert and Denise DeCaires-Narain, as well as readings from Allfrey's fiction and poetry by Diana Quick and Trish Cooke. On Wednesday 12th February, Professor Bill Schwarz will give a talk on the forthcoming second volume of his Memories of Empire trilogy.
