Funding is available every year to support substantive research and fieldwork in the Caribbean by postgraduate students at the University of Warwick. The funding is intended as a contribution towards expenses, such as travel to and subsistence in the Caribbean, and other costs incurred directly in relation to the research project. A maximum of £2000 will be awarded to an individual student. The deadline for applications is usually in the Spring term each year.

This Postgraduate Bursary is named after Gad Heuman who was the long-standing Professor of Caribbean History and Director of the Centre for Caribbean Studies at the University, and is now an Emeritus Professor.

Eligibility

Only postgraduates (both PGT and PGR) conducting research on the Caribbean and studying at the University of Warwick are eligible to apply for this bursary. Priority will be given to applicants who have no other source of research funding (e.g. through their PhD studentship or from their home department). Students demonstrating activities connected to the Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies and the Humanities will be preferred. The research funded should normally be completed by 30 September of the year in which the application is made.

Application

Postgraduate students applying for a Gad Heuman Postgraduate Bursary must provide:

• a short statement (maximum 500 words) detailing their current research proposal, indicating how they would benefit directly from a short period of study in the Caribbean. Proposals should specify a clear research methodology and feasible timeline for the completion of the project;
• a brief biographical statement, including a curriculum vitae;
• a detailed budget with fully quoted costings (up to a maximum of £2000), where possible.

Applications should be sent by 29th April 2024 as electronic attachments (as .doc or .pdf files) to Lisa Cook, Secretary of the Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies, at lisa.d.cook@warwick.ac.uk. No late or retrospective applications will be considered for the current year of submission.

Successful applicants

Successful applicants will be informed by the end May. They will receive two-thirds of the bursary in advance of conducting the research, and one third on completion. A statement of actual expenses with receipts and a 500-word summary of the research results and analysis should be forwarded to Lisa Cook within three months of the completion of the proposed research visit. Late claims will not be accepted. Only actual incurred spend, evidenced by receipts, will be funded. It is a condition of each award that the ‘Gad Heuman Postgraduate Bursary’ is acknowledged in any subsequent publications or output that draw directly on work supported by the Bursary.
