WiHEA visiting Teaching Fellow Matthew Nicholls

The Warwick International Higher Education Academy is pleased to support the visit of Dr. Matthew Nicholls to the University of Warwick from the 3rd to 4th May 2017.

Dr. Matthew Nicholls is an associate professor in Classics at the University of Reading who uses digital modelling for research and teaching. His ‘Virtual Rome’ project has entailed the creation of a digital model of ancient Rome, now used in teaching, gaming, television and virtual reality contexts (Google Cardboard, Oculus Rift, see more here.). At Reading he teaches a module called ‘Digital Silchester’, which has embedded technology use, student-led curriculum design and enquiry-based learning. Matthew’s work was recognised with a Guardian University Award in 2014. For some idea of his work, see the videos available here and here.

Dr. Nicholls will offer a lecture and computer lab session while at Warwick. The lecture is free and open to all, but numbers are limited for the computer lab sessions (due to the number of computers in the room), so please sign up for a slot below if you would like to attend a workshop.

Lecture: Virtual Rome: digital modelling of the ancient city, for research, teaching, and outreach. Wed 3rd May, 4pm, OC0.04.

In this session Dr Matthew Nicholls will talk about his large, detailed digital model of ancient Rome, and explain some of the processes and challenges involved in creating it. He will also discuss its use in teaching, as a research tool, and as a way of bringing ancient history to public audiences.

Lab session: Getting started in SketchUp: an introduction to a 3D drawing environment for historical (and other) reconstructions. Wed 3rd May 1-3pm (R0.41, the computer lab near LIB 2), with a repeat seminar on Thurs 11am-1pm (R0.41) (NB: each session is limited to 42 participants)
In this session Matthew Nicholls will introduce beginners to some of the basic tools in SketchUp, and demonstrate its use as a tool for teaching and thinking about (for example) environments and buildings.
