About

My thesis explores perceptions of the world in the first two centuries AD and how Rome interacted with the peoples on the north-eastern fringes of that world, namely around the Danube and northern Black Sea regions. This region cannot clearly be pushed into an east v. west dichotomy so lends itself to the study of comparisons between how Romans viewed and presented different peoples, and how the Roman state in turn interacted with them. For instance, the Romans waged war against and eventually annexed the Dacian people, while the Bosporans remained independent, albeit with a brief interlude of annexation under Nero, for much of their history. Therefore, my thesis also contrasts how diplomacy and the military were used in dealing with these neighbours of the Empire, and how this affected Rome’s presentation of them, and these people’s reactions to Rome.
