Letters on Tokens

Bronze tokens with letters: the Juror's tokens.

Well known through Aristotle's Athenaion Politeia, juror's tokens have been recovered in the Athenian Agora, more specifically in the so-called 'Ballot Deposit' by Homer A. Thompson. The find proved the relationship of the letter tokens with the allotment of jurors to courts.

Letters are found on tokens since their very beginnings in Athens. Generally they function to assign persons to seating areas.
