Introduction. Here you will find a sample selection of tokens.

Some 1,000 tokens have been excavated in Athens in general and in the Athenian Agora in particular.

Hundreds are kept in museums across Europe as a result of major private collections, such as the Meletopoulos, the Hallerstein, the Heldreich and the Froehner collection, which were assembled in the 19th century.

Since that time, research has made little progress. This online exhibition aims to inspire further thoughts and provide incentive to a fresh approach.

The Online Exhibition on Athenian tokens forms part of the Project 'Tokens and their Cultural Biography in Athens from the Classical Age to the End of Antiquity', a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, which has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 794080-2.
