Organisation

LECTURES are to be held on Thursdays 10:00-12:00, Room H356.

SEMINARS are to be held in Weeks 3 and 8 ONLY: Thursday, 16:00-17:00, Room H245

Students taking the Latin prescription are expected to participate in an additional hour-long reading class every week. This will be scheduled at a time to be agreed by both students and the module tutor.

Class Structure

Classes will be held on Thursdays 10:00-12:00 every week, with Seminars on Thursday 16:00-17:00 in Weeks 3 and 8 only. The weekly 2-hr classes usually take the form of a lecture followed by structured class discussion (or ‘Lecture, with discussion’ as indicated on the programme). All students will be required to prepare for the topic of discussion, thinking about the ideas involved as well as reading the material prescribed. The advantage of a weekly meeting is that it gives you time to pace your study and reflections on the subject concerned. The two Seminars in each term (Weeks 3 and 8) will focus on literary theory and essay-writing skills.

Students are obliged to attend every class since the assessed essays and examination will draw upon the material covered in them. If you have to miss a lecture or seminar for some good reason, please provide an explanation in advance (for student records), or if that is not possible, as soon as possible thereafter.

The Latin reading classes are no less crucial for students who are taking this option as part of the Classics and English and Latin degrees: the classes address issues of interpretation relevant for essays and context questions as well as questions of translation.
