You should also aim to see as many films as possible:

Michael Cacoyannis has directed several Greek tragedies on film.

Derek Elley’s book offers a detailed list of the various epic films that you can see.

Hollywood has also been very attracted by the allurements of antiquity. You should see:

Ben Hur (two versions: 1925; 1959)
Spartacus (two versions out of three: 1952; 1960)
The Robe (1953)
Quo Vadis? (1913; 1924; and 1951)
Cleopatra (three versions: 1917; 1934; and 1963)
The Giant of Marathon (1960)
The War of the Trojans (1960)
Goliath and the Sins of Babylon (1964)
The End of the Roman Empire (1964)

European cinema has also been extremely interested in the ancient world. There are numerous Italian films of the silent era that are worth a look.

More recently we have:

Fellini’s Satyricon (1969)
Sebastiane (1976)
Caligula (1979)

More recently, still, Hollywood has returned to antiquity with blockbuster and a critical flop:

Gladiator (2000)
Troy (2004)
