Late submission and word count policies

Policy on late submission

Work which is late without permission will be penalised by 5 marks per day.

Policy on over or under-length work
All assessed work must conform to the stated word lengths. The word lengths are inclusive of quotations and footnotes but not of bibliography. You will be asked to provide a word count of your essays on the cover sheet which you complete when the work is submitted. We allow a penalty-free margin of up to 10% over or under-length. Essays that are 10-25% over or under-length will incur a penalty of 3 marks. Essays that are more than 25% over or under-length will be refused and a mark of nil will be recorded.

EN908 WRITING POEMS

Submit A and B.
Page specifications should be interpreted as follows: line space 1.0; font/size Times Roman, 12pt.

For 36 CATS:

A. PORTFOLIO OF POETRY
EITHER
1. A sequence of poems / a long poem of between 17 and 20 pages
or
2. A portfolio collection of poems between 17 and 20 pages.

B. CRITICAL PROSE
EITHER
1. 1700-word commentary on the aims and processes involved in writing your portfolio
Or
2. 1700 word essay on a critical issue that arises from the syllabus.

For 30 CATS:

A. PORTFOLIO OF POETRY
EITHER
1. A sequence of poems / a long poem of between 13 and 17 pages
or
2. A portfolio collection of poems between 13 and 17 pages.

B. CRITICAL PROSE
EITHER
1. 1500-word commentary on the aims and processes involved in writing your portfolio
Or
2. 1500 word essay on a critical issue that arises from the syllabus.

EN911 CREATIVE WRITING:

Assessment for the MA module ‘Creative Writing’
Please submit work as follows:

For 36 CATS: 4800 words of creative writing (the portfolio) AND a 1,700 word essay which is a fully-referenced critical account of the aims and processes involved in writing the portfolio.

For 30 CATS: 4000 words of creative writing (the portfolio) AND a 1,500 word essay which is a fully-referenced critical account of the aims and processes involved in writing the portfolio. The portfolio

The portfolio can take the following forms, but bear in mind these parameters are for guidance only.

1. An extended piece of fiction;

2. A portfolio of shorter fiction, for example two short stories or three short stories;

3. A portfolio of poetry as follows:

36 CATS: A long poem of between 17 and 20 pages or a collection of poems between 17 and 20 pages.

30 CATS: A long poem of between 13 and 17 pages or a collection of poems between 13 and 17 pages.

4. A portfolio that contains a mix of genres is permitted but its length and make-up must be agreed with the MA Convenor and Module Tutor.

All work should be word-processed, single-spaced. Use only Times Roman. Your portfolio counts for 75% of your mark, and the essay for 25%.
