Palimpsest: the MA in Writing Anthology

Palimpsest

The anthology is an annual project for students on the MA in Writing to publish a collection of stories. The project allows students to gain experience of the entire publishing process, working through the editing, proofreading, typesetting, cover design, and printing stages. It offers students the chance to showcase their work and present it to agents in a professional manner, promoting both the course and themselves.

One of the main objectives of the anthology project is to organise fundraising events to cover the expense of publication. Such fundraising events have included reading evenings, where lecturers and authors such as A.L. Kennedy, David Vann, and Ian Sansom have shared their latest work. The anthology also had a book launch in London Piccadilly Waterstones, which was attended by several agents, some of whom have contacted writers in the anthology.

This year’s anthology – Palimpsest, is a collection of short stories that involve strangers, fire and the uncanny, to name just a few. The stories in this anthology are layers, they rest atop one another, and represent our growth. Palimpsest is by its definition evocative of progression, and that’s one thing that we as writers have all been working towards – a style that belongs to us. Having our own layer.

‘Palimpsest provides new landscapes, new inhabitants… a rewriting of our dreams, hope and fears, a departure which is a return’ – Ian Sansom
