MA in Writing Course Structure for Full-time Students 2018-19

FULL-TIME COURSE STRUCTURE

There are two pathways through the Warwick MA in Writing.

Route A (TAUGHT): FIVE taught modules (compulsory Research for Writing plus optional core module EN910 Fiction Workshop I or EN994 Non-fiction workshop plus THREE other modules), in which a wide range of written work is produced. NO Long Project.

Route B (LONG PROJECT): THREE taught modules (compulsory Research for Writing plus optional core module EN910 Fiction Workshop I or EN994 Non-fiction workshop plus ONE other module in the spring term), plus a long written project in any genre which the Programme is able to supervise.

ROUTE A: for full time students

Full-time students on this route take TWO modules in the autumn term (in addition to compulsory Research for Writing) and TWO modules in the spring term. The summer is given to writing up, supported by additional workshops and 1:1 tutorials. The course is intended to provide a strong basis in creative work in the autumn term, followed by an element of optionality in the following terms. What follows describes the normal pattern, but there is some flexibility in module choice: for example, a student may be able to study an MA in English Literature module in the spring term, subject to her/his previous academic experience.

AUTUMN TERM

Full-time students will study (in addition to compulsory Research for Writing):

OPTIONAL CORE MODULE:

  • EN910 Warwick Fiction Workshop I or
  • EN994 Non-Fiction Workshop

OPTION MODULE:

SPRING TERM

Full-time students will study two option modules:

  • EN906 Warwick Fiction Workshop II

SUMMER TERM

Continuation of written projects under supervision

ROUTE B: LONG PROJECT for full time students

Permission to follow the 'Long Project' route depends on an assessment of the student's prior experience of writing and of a proposal submitted before the course begins, as well as on the availability of a qualified supervisor or supervisors. Supervision of the Long Project begins in Term 2 and continues through Term 3.

AUTUMN TERM

Full-time students following Route B will study ONE module (in addition to compulsory Research for Writing):

  • EN910 Warwick Fiction Workshop I or
  • EN994 Non-Fiction Workshop

SPRING TERM

EN957 Long Project: 1:1 tutorials begin

Plus ONE of the following:

  • EN906 Warwick Fiction Workshop II

SUMMER TERM
