Honours Level Modules

Below is a list of all modules available in to Undergraduates in English but these do not all run every year so for details of which modules are running in the next academic year, see the Undergraduate Current Options BookletLink opens in a new window

Below is a summary of the Department's undergraduate modules.

Not all option modules listed will necessarily be offered every year and new modules may be added every year. see the Undergraduate Current Options BookletLink opens in a new window

Please note that students not studying for literature degrees must normally have obtained a good pass in a literary A-level before taking a course offered by this Department.

There are restrictions on which modules students from outside of the department can and cannot take. You should make sure you know what these before making your final choice.

First-year modules

These modules are open to any English studies /Joint degree students who did not take them in their first year, and any students from outside the department.

EN121 Medieval to Renaissance English Literature (EN2J5/EN3J5) (Honours variant available)

  • These two modules are not open to other students at any level.

EN107 British Theatre since 1939 - English and Theatre students only

Compulsory Core modules

These modules are compulsory specified student groups in Q300, VQ32, QW34. See "Degree StructureLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new window" page for full breakdown of what you need to take.

EN2L4 Literature in TheoryLink opens in a new window - core for 2nd year (intermediate) English students (Q300)

In 2023-24 there is no compulsory core for Q300s - only an optional core (See below)

Writing History - core for 2nd year (intermediate) English & History students

EN3K9 DissertationLink opens in a new window - core for 3rd year (finalist) English & History students

Drama and Democracy - 2nd Year (intermediate) English and Theatre students only

Shakespeare: Text and Performance, Now and Then- 3rd Year (finalist) English and Theatre students only


Optional Core modules

[relevant in 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/34]

Intermediate (2nd year) Q300 English students must take a module that is specified to fall into the "pre-1900" category. These are outlined on the "Degree Structures"Link opens in a new window page.

Finalist (3rd year) Q300 English students must take a module that is specified to fall into the "Global Literatures" category. These are outlined on the "Degree Structures"Link opens in a new window page.

Intermediate (2nd year) VQ32 English and History students must take 30 CATS worth of optional core module(s) that fall in the Early Modern History categories from either English department or History department.


EN3E0 Dissertation Module

This module is available to final year (including intercalated finalist English Studies) students registered on English, English and Theatre Studies, Film and Literature, Philosophy and Literature, English and Classics, English and French, English and German, English and Italian, English and Hispanic Studies, English and Cultural Studies.

Please note that English and History students have a compulsory dissertation specific to their degree.

Please note the "Research Project" that was compulsory for Q300 Finalists in 2022/23 is no longer running from 2023/24. You may choose to do the EN3E0 optional dissertation or any other module as well as your optional core of a Global Literature module (see "Degree StructuresLink opens in a new window").

  • Not all modules will run every year. The "list of all modules" section of the current year options booklet available in the second half of term 2 will indicate what is running in the forthcoming academic year.
  • 1 term modules of 15 CATS further down
  • Q300 students will need to ensure at least one of their modules fits their "optional core" requirement for their level.
    VQ32 intermediate students need to ensure they meet their Early Modern requirements.
