Thesis Title: Documentary films in post-dictatorial Chile: politics of memory and national identity (1990-2010).

My thesis seeks to analyse the development of ‘political’ documentary films during the post-dictatorship in Chile (1990 – 2010). I explore particularly the films’ articulation of a ‘politics of memory’ in order to understand how non-fiction represents and constructs the trajectory of contemporary Chilean society from dictatorship towards democracy. Whilst performing close textual analysis of various documentary films by Patricio Guzmán, Carmen Castillo, Patricio Henríquez, Cristian Leighton and Ignacio Agüero among many others filmmakers, I explore how Pinochet’s dictatorship and Chilean identity has been represented and has transformed from the beginning of 'transition' to now-a-days, focusing on some key historical and political moments of the country.
