Italian Beginners (LL186)

Summary

Level:

You are a complete beginner, knowing virtually nothing of the language.

Main Objectives:

This beginners course will aim to develop competence in a range of predictable, simple everyday language tasks, providing a very basic knowledge of the structure and vocabulary of the language.

Teaching:

Teaching will be delivered fully online on MSTeams.

One weekly two-hour online session for 19 weeks.

Course Text (must be bought by students)

  • Nuovo Espresso 1, Luciana Ziglio, Giovanna Rizzo, Alma Edizioni, ISBN: 9788861823181 (book + audio online). Audio tracks available, upon free registration, on the publisher's website. Students can get either the physical book, or the digital version.

Course Description

Based on a step-by-step approach, the course is divided into learning blocks each of which focuses on practical, useful and manageable language. You will develop cultural awareness of Italy. You will have access to online resources for a more independent learning.

Homework tasks will be set each week to consolidate what you have learnt in class.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • understand a range of familiar spoken phrases, simple questions and short dialogues.
  • understand the main points in a short written text; understand simple forms for basic personal details.
  • understand words and short phrases on common public notices.
  • answer simple questions and give basic information; ask and answer simple questions about place of work or study, job, family or interests.
  • make basic introductions and greetings and courtesy phrases.
  • Write short simple texts (postcards and emails)
  • fill in a simple form with personal details; write short sentences on familiar topics.
