BA in Modern Languages (R900)

Route 1. Study two languages to degree level (with effect from 2021/22) with the University of Warwick's BA in Modern Languages.

Route 2. Study three languages to degree level with the University of Warwick's BA in Modern Languages.

Route 1.

Love languages? Already studied one language to A-Level? Thinking of trying something new? Or maybe you have studied two languages at A-Level and want to take them both further? On the first route on the BA Modern Languages (from 2021/22 academic year entry) you take two languages. You then take a culture module in your main language and can choose whether to take a further culture module in your main language, a culture module from your second language (where appropriate), or a cross-school module such as LN102.

Your first language must be post A-Level, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Your second language can be taken at any level if it is French, German, Italian, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. If it is Arabic, Japanese or Russian, it will normally be taken at beginner's or post-GCSE level.

Route 2.

Already studied one or two languages to A-level and keen to try something new? On the second route on the BA Modern Languages, you take three languages and one cultural module (normally in your main language). Choose your first two languages from two European languages: French, German, Italian and Spanish. Your third language is selected from Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish.

Your first language must be post A-level French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Your second language may be French, German, Italian, or Spanish, (entry at a variety of levels, including both post A-level and beginners).

Your third language can be taken at any level if it is French, German, Italian, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. If it is Arabic, Japanese or Russian, it will normally be taken at beginner’s or post-GCSE level.

Course pathways

You will normally spend three years on campus at Warwick and one year abroad.

Route 1.
Year One

You will take two language modules and two cultural modules. One of the cultural modules comes from your main language, while the other can be either from your main language, from your second language (where appropriate) or a cross-School module such as LN102 Translation: Methods and Practice.

Year Two/Year Three

You will take two core language modules while at Warwick. You will also select cultural modules from your main language and then additional culture modules either in your main language or in your second language (where appropriate) or a cross-School module.

Year Two/Year Three

You may choose to spend a Year Abroad either in Year 2 or in Year 3. You may choose to split your Year Abroad between your two languages. If you take a language ab initio we recommend you spend at least four months in that country. You may opt to spend a full year in one country, or split the year between two countries. We encourage students to spend time in each country where their language is spoken, using vacation periods as well as the academic year abroad.

Year Four

You will take two core language modules while at Warwick. You will also select cultural modules from your main language and then additional culture modules either in your main language or in your second language (where appropriate) or a cross-School module.

Route 2.
Year One

You will take three language modules and one culture module. This can be a culture module from either your first or your second language of French, German, Italian or Hispanic Studies, or LN102 Translation: Methods and Practice.

Year Two/Three/Four

In all years of the degree, you will take three core language modules. You will also select cultural modules, in your first and/or second language. Culture is also taught through the language modules.

Where you spend your year abroad is flexible. If you take a language ab initio we recommend you spend at least four months in that country. You may opt to spend a full year in one country, or split the year between two countries. We encourage students to spend time in each country where their language is spoken, using vacation periods as well as the academic year abroad.
