We support three major pathways to funded postdoctoral research in our German Studies. We cannot support applications from every party who enquires with us: we need to judge the quality of your work against that of your peers and our own ability to provide you with an appropriate research environment. That being said, if you feel you are a talented researcher who could envisage working in Warwick, then please do not let this deter you!

Below is a summary of details relating to these as they stand in September 2021. Please note these may be incomplete and subject to some changes by the foundations providing the funding – you will need to stay on top of this and visit the website for updates regularly. You need to research your options carefully, check your eligibility and the suitability of your project, and engage with us in dialogue about your plans in good time. This is particularly relevant for the BA post-doc fellowships with its Oct 2021 deadline (see below).

Following a brief expression of interest by email, please then send us a full academic CV and a project description/ statement. This should be 1-2 pages in the first instance which should contain a paragraph covering each of the following areas: summary of your PhD theses; description of your ongoing project; its relevance and innovation to scholarship; how you think your project meshes with us/ our expertise; your timeline and proposed outcomes.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships

Eligibility: PhD submitted by closing date (below); cannot hold or have held a full time permanent academic position in the UK; must have a UK degree or be in a temporary UK academic post at time of application; cannot combine/ overlap this with another fellowship or grant; applicants should normally apply away from institutions previously attended/ worked at

Duration: normally three years Outcome: normally a substantial piece of written research (i.e monograph)

Deadline: Open Jan 2022, close 16:00 GMT, February 24, 2022.

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships

Eligibility: you must be within three years of the award of a doctorate; PhD in hand/ submitted by close of application; must be a UK or EEA national, or have completed a doctorate at a UK university; applicants who do not fall into one of these categories must demonstrate a strong prior association with the UK academic community, for example through already having been employed in a temporary capacity (longer than twelve months) at a UK university

Duration: normally tenable for three years Outcome: piece of substantial written research entailing MORE then just publication of PhD thesis (new project, extension of thesis etc.)

Deadline: Two-stage process – first (outline) stage, by 5pm Oct 8, 2021. Contact Warwick by Sept 15th latest to express interest.

Newton Postdoctoral Fellowships

Eligibility: any young international researcher with a PhD in hand. MUST be from outside UK, coming to UK sponsor institution – no more than 7 years postdoc experience and must have been working outside the UK.

Duration: 2 years Deadline: t.b.c for early 2021 to commence later in 2021 or early 2022.
