Global Research Priorities

The earth from space

Our Global Sustainable Development (GSD) programmes build on research excellence from across the University.

What are the Global Research Priorities?

In 2012, the University recognised the strength of interdisciplinary expertise on critical global issues by creating the Global Research Priorities (GRPs), which bring together researchers from around the University to work on common problems through an interdisciplinary approach. The programme supports cross-departmental collaboration, enabling the research community to work across disciplinary boundaries on issues of global importance.

The GRPs respond to complex, multi-faceted global problems that can only be tackled through collaborative research excellence. They unite academics from different disciplines to address some of humanity’s most urgent questions, and create fertile ground for new ideas to flourish and interdisciplinary research to grow - enabling us to improve the lives of people around the world. The GRP programme addresses some of the most challenging problems facing the world today, providing a platform for multidisciplinary research in 9 key areas of international significance, from health to sustainable cities, energy to connecting cultures.

Our involvement

How could technology improve healthcare? What would the impact on the environment be if we all drove electric cars? Our students are able to engage in rich debates beyond their courses, with the opportunity to interact with researchers, attend lectures, and engage with events in the GRPs. Previously, the GRPs have supported undergraduate students from the GSD Department by providing funding for our dissertation students’ primary research and involvement in the British Conference of Undergraduate Research. In addition, some of our staff are also involved in the GRPs as Academic Leads.
