I am an Assistant Professor and media practitioner with many years of experience working on media productions and in university education. My professional and practice work has included television documentaries, sports programming, award-winning short films and feature film writing. I also have extensive experience in developing film and media projects with community organisations, corporate companies, arts bodies, and universities. Over my 20 years as a media professional, I have taught and worked with young adults in a wide range of formal and informal educational settings to develop their filmmaking, media production skills and professional practice. My extensive teaching skills have been honed by the experience of continuing to work as a successful freelance practitioner, and artistic and managing director.
Research Interests:
My research has focused on the notion of cultural democracy and cultural pluralism and how these ideas and theories could be applied to community and socially engaged arts practice. I am currently engaged in a PhD by Practice in which I am producing several research papers and accompanying media artefacts. In 2022 I produced 'Cod's Head Culture for the Poor' A 60-minute documentary examining the British Community Arts Movement and its relationship with Cultural Democracy.
Teaching and supervision:
I am the strand lead for the Media Lab in the Media and Creative Industries degree. I am the module convenor for the following modules.
