PhD Title: Theatre Space in Northern Ireland since partition
I began this research with the intention of recording details of the spaces used for professional theatre performance in the six Ulster counties since 1922. My notion was to interrogate and contextualise this information against the changing political, economic and social background, focusing on space rather than performance practice or dramaturgy. However my research, as it often does, has led me down different, winding paths; some historical, some contemporary, all interesting.
I also set out to consider matters of culture, cultural identity and in particular, cultural sustainability in Northern Ireland. This, perhaps not surprisingly, has turned out to be a substantial topic which, in order to arrive at a working definition, has meant wide ranging research. However, cultural sustainability is a thread that runs through all the case studies I have researched.
