Lorne Campbell

Lorne Campbell is a freelance director who has most recently been directing and developing productions and writers for a number of companies including Birmingham Rep, Theatre Royal Bath, The Traverse Theatre, Teatri Polski (Bydgosczc, Poland), Paines Plough, BBC Radio 3, Oran Mor and 59 Productions. He has also been visiting tutor at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and The Actor's Centre. He is Artistic Director of Greyscale , a theatre company at the cutting edge of contemporary theatre writing, developing and producing processes.

Lorne will hold his Fellowship at the Shakespeare Institute of the University of Birmingham. He will be exploring liveness in performance and the generation, development and refinement of text through the impulse and performative existence of the actor. He will be using three texts, Shakespeare's Coriolanus, My Arm by Tim Crouch and What would Judas Do? by Stewart Lee, to examine how rehearsal structure can encourage performers to take greater responsibility not only for the structuring of their performance but also its variety; how a direct acknowledgement of the audience can alter and release the theatrical experience; how work with an established text can lead to actor-catalysed generation of new text for performance?

During his Fellowship Lorne is leading a project at Warwick, New Plays in New Ways, which will create new pieces of theatre to be shown at CAPITAL's New Work Festival 30 April-1 May 2010..
