First Year M1

In the light of experience with our separate Masters programmes, we have elected to keep some diversity of taught programme in the first year, allocating students to the programme which best bridges between their undergraduate training & readiness for research, and our course overall. The Warwick M1 modules offer a broad curriculum but with little optionality, suited to students such as Maths or Physics graduates who are less ready to specialise. The Chalmers/Gothenburg M1 modules are more selectively focussed and have been developed to be accessible to a wider range of Science and Engineering graduates. The Ecole Polytechnique M1 modules offer a rapid path through the core leading to wide choice of options, but for mathematically well prepared students.

1.At those nodes with a weekly series of talks on complex systems by local or visiting speakers, all M1 students are expected to attend it regularly. All M1 students must attend the M1 school, which is held in May or June at or near one of the nodes. All M1 students must present their projects to the Projects Conference which may be co-located with the M1 School or run by video-conference.

2. All students must take at least 3 of the following four modules, although the preference is that all four are taken where possible:

a. Dynamical Systems, Introducing the concepts of attractors and chaos and techniques used in modern dynamical systems theory. Taught as MAT551 (4 ECTS) or MAP561 (4 ECTS) at Polytechnique; MA998 (6 ECTS) at Warwick; FFR130 (7.5 ECTS) at Gothenburg.

b. Numerical Simulation of Complex Systems with an emphasis on problem solving.
Taught as FFR120 (7.5 ECTS) at Gothenburg; MA934 (6 ECTS) at Warwick; INF561 (4 ECTS) or MAP441 (4 ECTS) at Polytechnique.

c. Informatics, introducing mining data from diverse methodologies, secondary analysis and the challenge of imperfect and subjective data. Taught as MA930 (6 ECTS) at Warwick; FFR050 (7.5 ECTS) at Gothenburg; INF582 (4 ECTS) or MAP555 (4 ECTS) at Polytechnique.

d. Modelling Biological Systems and Structures Taught as HSS650F (6 ECTS) at Polytechnique; FFR110 (7.5 ECTS) at Gothenburg; MA933 (6 ECTS) at Warwick.

3. M1 Option requirements. Students must make up their total M1 taught credit (inclusive of core items above) to at least 37.5 ECTS from the following:

(a) Taught at Gothenburg (note core modules taught there already carry more credit)

Artificial Neural Networks (FFR135, 7.5 ECTS)

Stochastic Optimisation Algorithms (FFR105, 7.5 ECTS)

Nonlinear and Adaptive Control (ESS076, 7.5 ECTS)

(b) Taught at Warwick:

Statistical Mechanics and its Applications to Complex Systems (CO904, 6 ECTS)

Computational Methods for complex systems (CO923, 9 ECTS)

Mathematical models of biological systems (CH924, 6 ECTS)

Probabilistic and statistical inference (CO902, 6 ECTS)

Complexity in Social Science (IM903, 7.5 ECTS)

Topics in mathematical modelling (MA999, 6 ECTS)

High performance scientific computing (CY901, 6 ECTS)

Practical algorithms and data structures (CY903, 6 ECTS)

or options from the MSc in Mathematics of Systems lists.

(c) Taught at Ecole Polytechnique:

EMMCS M1 students at EP select courses during the first weeks upon their arrival through examination of textbooks (freely available at the EP library), discussion and contact with instructors and professors.
They can select the courses listed below, as well as others.

Theoretical analysis of Complex System (6 ECTS)
Complex Systems Made Simple by Agent-Based Modeling (6 ECTS)
Networks: Empirical results, Modeling and Dynamical Processes on Networks (4 or 6 ECTS)
Therapeutic evaluation: thinking in systems (4 or 6 ECTS)
Multiscale approach to learning (4 or 6 ECTS)
Open problems, seminars, Journal Club (1 or 5 ECTS)

4. M1 Project (20 ECTS ): All students will carry out a three-month research project in periods EF. In addition to written report, they will make an oral presentation to the whole programme at the Projects Conference.

Progression Requirement for M2: students must have passed M1 project, M1 core modules, and at least 57.5 ECTS of M1 credit at an overall standard of grade C.

Please note that module availablity in each node may differ from year to year dependent on yearly changes to teaching staff and teaching structures at each individual institution.
