This case study provides a set of tips for improving students’ essay-writing ability with respect to ‘range’ and ‘evidence’. Throughout the essay-writing stages (lecture note-taking, secondary literature note-taking and constructing the essay itself), students are guided on employing a ‘tick-list’ system to ensure that their note-taking and essay writing cover all relevant points, back them up with suitable evidence, and reference evidence with a footnote or endnote. Thus coverage of issues, use of evidence and referencing are improved by systematic organization. These guidelines proved themselves especially useful in feeding back to first and second-year students who are still developing the more basic essay-writing skills.
