Just as navigators used simple, but elegant devices to check on a ship’s location at sea prior to the development of sophisticated tracking devices, instructors can use short evaluation devices to gather feedback about and keep student learning “on course” (Angelo and Cross, 1993). These regular checks permit the instructor to modify course material and students to know whether they are on track. This session will present several examples of evaluation techniques used in a variety of history courses.
