The Great History Conundrum: Reflections and Results from Three Years of a Games-Based Approach to Research Skills Training

Author: Alex Moseley
Type: Conference Presentation

History Passion Project

The Great History Conundrum (GHC) was developed at the University of Leicester to solve a number of problems, chiefly student engagement, with existing research skills training in a large first year History module. Now three years old, the GHC has achieved and exceeded requirements year on year, and a similar approach is now under development for other subject areas. This paper will reflect on key features of the GHC, provide a summary of the most interesting results, and suggest ways in which games-based elements could be of use in a wider range of historical teaching contexts.
