Student Placements

Student placements are an integral and credited part of all Q-Step degrees. They are designed to give students experience of working with quantitative data and methods in professional organisations and to develop key employability skills.

Why does the course have an integrated placement period?


 Placements benefit students in a number of ways including:

  • Giving students the experience of working with quantitative data and methods in a professional organisation;
  • Enabling students to develop real world employability skills such as teamwork, professional communication skills , application of numeracy in the workplace, dealing with numbers, general quantitative awareness and its application in practical contexts, achieving set goals and targets and working to tight deadline.
  • Giving students practical experience and insights that they can draw on for their final dissertation

Are placements compulsory?

 Yes, placements are a compulsory and credited part of the degree course.

When will the placement take place?

 The placement will take place in the summer after the end of the second year of the degree course.

How long will the placement period be?

 The duration of the placement is 3 weeks.

Will the placement be paid?

 Yes, student are paid durectly by the University. The exact level of remuneration is still to be determined.

What types of organisations will students be placed in?

 Students will be placed with organisations requiring quantitative data research, report writing, small data analysis, project management and related analytical activities.

Warwick already has a strong successful working partnership with over 300 research focused oorganisations, including large national statistical organisations (e.g. Office for National Statistics, Royal Statistical Society), local and regional government (e.g. Coventry City Council) and data intensive organisations (e.g.: Black Swan Analysis Limited, Data2Decisions). Further work will be undertaken, in conjunction with Warwick’s Careers Placement Learning Manager, to consolidate University-employer partnerships and provide productive work experience placements for students.

Any suggestions and feedbaclkfrom students, about which organisations they wish to work with, would be welcome.

Where will the placements be located? 

The location of placements will vary. A range of local, regional and national (predominantly London-based) placements will be provided to suit student requirements as far as possible.

Will students have a choice in which placement they are allocated to?

 The process for allocating placements to students is still to be determined but every effort will be made to accommodate student interests, needs and wishes where ever possible.
