Why is a pot-belly bad for you? Over the last 15 years we have come to understand some of the underlying causes and this has helped develop new forms of treatment. Diabetes and related diseases develop because of both an inability to lay down fat in certain body fat depots and because of excess fat in the belly area and certain internal organs such as the liver.

Investigation of the underlying mechanisms linking obesity to disease has become one of the most dynamic and exciting areas of biomedical research today. How has research in this field impacted upon healthcare? What can we expect over the next decade? These are the themes the Inaugural lecture will focus on
