How we know what we know and why we do what we do - Research, Evidence, Knowledge, Practice and Values in Healthcare

Although much has been written about the importance of evidence in health care, the pathway from evidence production to evidence use is not straightforward. There are technical and organizational limits to an evidence-based approach, and the values of policy makers, healthcare commissioners, practitioners and patients inform each step of the way.

In this lecture I will reflect on research priorities, clinical and cost effectiveness measurement, practice variation, and individualised decision-making, exploring some of the issues which are involved in how we know what we know, and why we do what we do.
