GP specialist appointed to role with National Diabetes Audit

Professor Roger Gadsby MBE has been appointed GP clinical lead for the National Diabetes Audit (NDA).

Roger will play a crucial role in ensuring the audit, the largest of its kind in the world, continues to provide key information about diabetes care and outcomes that is vital to improving patient care in England and Wales.

Alongside his diabetes education and research role at Warwick Medical School, he has been heavily involved with many national academic and health institutions and has spent over 30 years as a practicing GP. Roger has an MBE for services to medicine and diabetes care.

Speaking on his appointment to the NDA, which is managed by the Health and Social Care information Centre in partnership with Diabetes UK and commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership, Roger said:

“I am very excited to be working for the national diabetes audit, to raise its profile in primary care and to use its information to promote improvements in care for people with diabetes in primary care.”

A diabetes clinical expert and advisor for NHS Evidence and the National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Roger also works with Coventry PCT’s as a GP with a specialist interest in diabetes.

In his role at Warwick Medical School, he has developed accredited diabetes education and Masters programmes, and is a visiting professor at the Institute of Diabetes in Older People (IDOP) at the University of Bedfordshire.

He helped develop 'Warwick Diabetes Care', to deliver high quality education, research and information to improve diabetes care and he has seen more than 10,000 healthcare professionals complete the Certificate in Diabetes Care programme.

Roger has written several diabetes textbooks and chapters along with more than 300 articles and papers and has served on diabetes guideline development groups for both NICE and the International Diabetes Federation.

A founder member of the UK Primary Care Diabetes Society (PCDS), Roger previously served as clinical lead for the diabetes specialist library for the National Library for Health (NLH), chair of the Midland Faculty Board and as a member of the RCGP Midland Faculty board and the RCGP Council.
