The iDREAM project, launched by the University Hospital in Coventry (UHCW), will bring health and social care professionals together to develop new ways of treating diabetes.

This is the first time the programme has been launched at a UK hospital and it aims to create a best practice model for managing diabetes. It will result in major reductions in deaths, hospitalisation, blindness, amputations and renal failure due to diabetes.

iDREAM will be delivered from the new Warwickshire Institute of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism (WISDEM), located at UHCW. The institute has been inspired by a unique partnership between the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, the University of Warwick and Novo Nordisk A/S, the Danish diabetes care company.

WISDEM provides specialist diabetes services for those with more complex conditions and it is a centre for the partnership to collaborate on groundbreaking national and international research.

Warwick Medical School's Professor Sudhesh Kumar is leading the iDREAM project at WISDEM.

He said: "Our institute is pleased to launch this programme that aims to help those with diabetes to achieve a quality of life similar to that of someone without diabetes. By working in partnership with people with diabetes and a number of other healthcare organisations, I believe we can achieve the iDREAM goals."
