My PhD research at the University of Warwick focused on the isolation and characterisation of bacteriophages that infect the marine Roseobacter. During this time I encountered the world of next-generation sequencing an interest I have followed up in my postdoctoral work at the University of Birmingham with Prof. Mark Pallen. There I examined the genomic profile of the emerging hospital pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii and the use of rapid high-throughput sequencing to diagnose bacterial infections and unravel transmission chains during hospital outbreaks of A. baumannii. I am also interested in tracking the evolution and spread of disease such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis in historical samples.
