Aims and Learning Outcomes

Aims
  • To develop your knowledge and understanding of multidisciplinary and orthodontic treatment systems and the interface with other dental specialties
  • To develop diagnostic and treatment skills related to orthodontic treatment systems
  • To develop the skills to critically appraise data and technical information from academic, commercial and other relevant sources and to be aware of the limitations of materials to be used in orthodontics

Within the overall Masters course:

  • To develop your diagnostic, clinical and theoretical knowledge and skills so that they acquire the ability to evaluate the needs of individual patients, consider ethical and other relevant implications of different treatment plans, determine appropriate treatment rationales and carry out such treatments using suitable force systems.
Learn to
  • Diagnose which cases require a multidisciplinary approach to treatment
  • Make an informed decision as to which cases are suitable for them to treat
  • Demonstrate awareness of the different types of orthodontic force systems and critically appraise their various strengths and weaknesses
  • Assess which systems are suitable in different clinical situations
  • Demonstrate a good theoretical knowledge of the force systems available and their biological actions on the dento-alveolar complex
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the ethical, financial and clinical issues that need to be appraised when planning an individual's care
  • Demonstrate ability in written communication skills
  • Demonstrate ability to use information technology
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity
