This module provides a valuable opportunity to gain information about the wide range of research projects available across the university.

  • Features academics from across the university, covering a broad range of research topics
  • The module allows students to make an informed choice about the most suitable laboratory project
  • A pre-requisite to Laboratory Projects 1 and 2

Aims and learning outcomes:
By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Operate safely and effectively in the science graduate research environment at University of Warwick
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the principles of interdisciplinary biomedical research
  • Critically evaluate interdisciplinary approaches to biomedical research in a range of research areas (to include projects under the general remit of Quantitative Biomedical Imaging)
  • Present research ideas and results to scientific audiences
  • Understand how to adapt their research skills to the requirements of varied and complex scientific contexts
  • Undertake systematic and complex searches of research literature and scientific information services
  • Write scientific reports

Module content:

There will be two half-day session per week. Each session will be led by a different academic and will focus on a specific research area. Sessions may include:

  • Lecture (delivered by the academic leading the session)
  • A group session based on some aspect of the research
  • Self-study

At the end of the module, each student will present a seminar based on one of the sessions. A portfolio recording achievements and supporting evidence will be maintained throughout the module.

Syllabus:

  • Principles of interdisciplinary biomedical research
  • Constructing systematic literature searches
  • Scientific information services
  • Conducting quantitative biomedical imaging research
  • Case studies in quantitative biomedical imaging research
  • Writing a literature review
  • Team development, learning styles, team roles
  • Skills in presentation of scientific research
Options:
