Topics covered will include:

  • Applied anatomy of upper and lower limbs including bones and soft tissues
  • Epidemiology and pathomechanics of upper and lower limb injuries
  • Assessment of upper and lower limb injuries including assessment of limb viability as well as assessment for replantation/revascularisation
  • Investigations including imaging
  • Emergency management of upper and lower limb injuries in A&E setting
  • Definitive management of upper and lower limb injuries including principles of fracture fixation, tendons, nerve and vessel repair and soft tissue cover

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate the applied anatomy of upper and lower limbs and be able to apply it in the context of traumatic injuries
  • Adopt a standard and systematic approach to assessing patients presenting with traumatic injuries to upper and lower limbs with emphasis on advanced trauma life support (ATLS) principles
  • Provide a detailed plan of justified investigations and a treatment plan based on a critical appraisal of best evidence, patient’s needs based on the injury and fulfil professional requirements related to record keeping and documentation
  • Develop critical appraisal skills in assimilating and synthesising patient variables including patterns of injury in order to support autonomous practice
  • Present a reflective assignment of a detailed case study incorporating critical appraisal of relevant literature
