Aims and Learning Outcomes

This module provides an overview and analysis of present and past clinical interventions to improve safety in major areas such as infection control, medication errors, clinical handover and emergency care, as well as a review of NHS infrastructures supporting those interventions. A review of NHS patient safety research will be critically appraised.


Learn to
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the main sources of information available and methods to study patient safety issues
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the roles of and the relationship between key NHS and organisational infrastructures for enhancing the quality and safety of care
  • Apply principles of clinical risk management to the identification, assessment and mitigation of hazards in their own work environment
  • Critically appraise research findings relating to interventions addressing high-risk patient safety areas
  • Compare and contrast methodologies and practices across disciplinary borders and learn from other specialities and contexts
