Accommodation

Medical Students spend a lot of their first year studying at the Medical School on campus, so many choose to live close to Warwick University initially.
Coventry, Kenilworth, and Leamington are all popular locations with medics; options vary from on-campus halls, university-managed housing, or private landlord-owned accommodation.
No location choice is perfect! Due to the nature of the course, students travel to a variety of locations over the years.
It’s important to consider transport options, especially if you don’t have your own car and will be reliant on public transport for placements.

A great option for meeting other Warwick University students, living on campus ensures you're close to the action!

Contracts are available for a shorter number of weeks (useful for first-year as you have the summer off), all bills are included, you're close to the library and University facilities, and any maintenance is carried out by the University.

However, there are limited numbers of places, and it's important to consider the course workload and the environment you want to live in.

The flexibility of choosing your own location and home, with the reassurance of knowing your landlord has been vetted by the University, and there is help available with any problems that arise.

The University ensures housing meets local authority standards of health and safety, furnishing and maintenance, and that the rents are suitable for student budgets.

You can opt to be placed with other medics or post-graduate students, including the option to choose medical students you've met at the offer holder day.

Private Accommodation

With complete flexibility of location, you can choose a house you like to suit your budget. Take on the contract for a whole house with other medics from the offer holder day, or choose to just rent a room alongside other students or professionals.

This option may involve taking on more responsibility, but could offer you a wider variety and lower-cost options overall.

Resident Life Tutor

Fola- 4th Year

What does an RLT do? You offer live-in welfare support for the undergraduate students on campus, helping with everything from academic issues to their health.

What accommodation comes with the role? Your own self-contained flat within the University Halls, with your own bedroom, bathroom and kitchen.

How much did it cost? Application is free, and the accommodation is rent-free- you pay just £60 a month for bills.

How did you apply? Applications open throughout the year. Fill in an online form first, then there is an interview stage with assessment and group work.

Benefits: Having your own space is great, and the cost has saved me from having to work alongside the course.

Negatives: It has been a hard role during COVID-19. It's also hard to be constantly available; any nights away need approval as annual leave.

On-Campus Halls

 Rebecca- 1st year

What were your halls like? I was in Tocil- it was a good-sized room with plenty of study space and storage. There were 4 bathrooms and 1 kitchen shared between 13 people.

How did you apply? I applied on the Warwick website after the offers came out- Tocil was the only halls option for Medics.

How much did it cost? It cost me £4400 split into 3 termly payments- around £115 a week.

Benefits: It was great living a 5-10 min walk from the Medical School. I enjoyed that the communal areas were cleaned regularly. I also loved the atmosphere of living on campus and meeting non-medics.

Negatives: The commute to Friday teaching at Coventry Hospital was very long on the bus. Some others had cleanliness issues with their flatmates in such big flats.

University-Managed Housing

Kat- 1st Year

Where was your accommodation? Our House was in Kenilworth, practically opposite the train station.

How did you apply? We applied via the University website, as a group who met at the offer holder day.
We ranked various locations and were allocated a house in Kenilworth.

How much did it cost? It was £90 a week without bills, but the rooms were different sizes so we all paid slightly different amounts.

Benefits: I loved Kenilworth; Abbey Fields is beautiful and the bus route was easy and less popular than those in Coventry. The cycle route to Med School was lovely.
Negatives: Fewer people live in Kenilworth so it was harder to integrate with other medics, but it meant we bonded lots as a house. With the process, there wasn't much choice on location or budget, but we ended up liking our house.
