Dr. James A. Burns

Biography

James was born in 1985 in Surrey, UK. He began his study of chemistry at the University of Warwick in 2003, reading for a Master of Chemistry award. This study included study of a broad range of subjects, from quantum mechanics to environmental chemistry, and culminated in a final year research project on glycopolymers by "click" chemistry for drug delivery under the supervision of Prof D.M.Haddleton.

James started his phD in 2008, funded by chemical additives company, The Lubrizol corporation. He is currently in his third and final year of his phD research, and is working on the synthesis of novel architectures by ATRP and RAFT polymerisation techniques. He is working with multi detector GPC to characterise branching and star formation, and also utilises a set of "click" type chemistries to introduce functionality to his polymers.

Research interest

Polymers for use as viscosity modifiers. Synthesis and analysis of star/branched polymers by RAFT and ATRP. He has recently been looking at analysis of polymer architecture using multi detector (high temperature) gel permeation chromatography.
