Why apply to MASDOC?

The integrated 4 year PhD is not accepting applications for entry October 2020.

If you are interested in applying to Warwick for a PhD project in these areas then please consult the

Post-graduate pages for the Mathematics and Statistics departments and how to apply for the standard PhD.

1. Why should I do my PhD at Warwick?

Together, the Mathematics and Statistics departments at Warwick form one of the largest and most dynamic concentrations of researchers in the mathematical sciences in the UK. Warwick Mathematics and Statistics hold the highest EPSRC grant income of all UK universities. This is highly correlated to research quality. Our research environment is outstanding and we are proud of our informal and friendly atmosphere. Whichever direction your research leads you in, there will be someone suitable who is enthusiastic to supervise you! We are centally located in the Zeeman building which was purpose-built to foster interaction.

2. I want to do a PhD in Analysis/Applied Maths/Probability/Statistics and am not interested in Statistics/Probability/Computation/Analysis (delete as appropriate). Is MASDOC for me?

MASDOC is very flexible indeed and we are very willing to take students who already know which area they want to work in. There is a lot of scope for choosing the courses which will suit you. Moreover, we believe that you will benefit from equipping yourself with a broad base of tools. To give an example of how such breadth can be useful, did you know that solutions to classical elliptical PDE's can be formulated in terms of certain stochastic processes (called diffusions)?

3. What is special about the MASDOC PhD?

There are two Phases to the programme. Phase 1 prepares you for embarking on a research project in Phase 2 via a taught component and a research training component.

A significant difference between MASDOC and a standard PhD is that we don't require you to have a clear idea of your future research topic at the start. We want to give you a very good feel for what's out there to enable you to make an informed decision. On the other hand, if you do have a specific topic in mind, MASDOC will provide you with the tools you will need to pursue it. The system is very flexible: some students may find that they want to specialise in one of the themes; others may end up using techniques from two or more of the areas in their research. Close contact with world-class researchers is built in to the MASDOC programme right from the start. We like nothing more than talking about our research and will be only too happy to help you to find the right path for you.

As a MASDOC student, you will work as part of a vibrant and supportive community of young researchers who are encouraged to collaborate and exchange ideas with each other and the wider mathematical community, be that at Warwick or further afield. Modern research is a truly international activity and in order to introduce you to this as soon as possible we have established links with various other outstanding research groups around the world. As part of MASDOC, you will be encouraged to participate in exchange programmes and joint workshops.

4. Will MASDOC only fit me for an academic career?

Not at all!

MASDOC PhD graduates will be very desirable to employers in industry, business or government organisations and laboratories: anywhere that high-level mathematical modelling and analysis are essential tools, you will be impeccably prepared. But if your aim is an academic career, MASDOC is also perfect for you.

Above all, we are looking for talented and committed people who are willing to work hard to meet the significant challenges of research.
