Module Aims

This is a core module for the MathSys CDT, in which students work in groups on research projects provided by external partners of the Centre. This module relies on knowledge gained in core MathSys MSc taught modules preparing students for research collaborations and teamwork skills. Students will learn how to apply the skills and methods they acquired in the MSc taught modules to a research project related to real-world problems. They will undertake research in groups under the guidance of a CDT staff member and an external partner.

Schedule and key dates for 2024

The schedule below is subject to change
  • Wednesday 31 January 11:00-14:00 - Projects Fair in D1.07 and MathSys common room
  • Wednesday 07 February at 12 noon (UK time) - deadline for students to rank project preferences
  • Week commencing 18 March - work on projects commences after end of term 2
  • Monday 29 April - assessed poster presentations at the Annual Retreat
  • Monday 03 June at 12 noon (UK time) - deadline to submit written reports (please upload here)

Assessment

Assessment of the RSGs will be primarily group-based and will include teamworking skills as part of the assessment criteria. Details of assessment criteria will be updated on the Module Resources page.

  • Participation and contribution to overall execution of project (individual assessment): 25% + pass/fail hurdle.
  • Poster presentation (group assessment): 25%
  • Written report (group assessment): 50%
    Regarding the formatting and structure, the report should be written as a journal article using the style/template of a journal appropriate for the field of the research, which you should agree on with the academic convenor of your group. If the journal you selected has a page limit, it can be ignored but the report should not exceed 8000 words (common sense should be used if there are a lot of equations).
    Regarding content, the report should be understandable by your fellow students, so the introduction and literature review could be a bit more detailed than in a research paper.
