Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Awards success

mohanThe Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, has announced the appointment of 21 new Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award holders including Mohan Balasubramanian of Warwick Medical School.

Jointly funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the scheme aims to provide universities with additional support to enable them to attract science talent from overseas and retain respected UK scientists of outstanding achievement and potential.

The newly appointed award holders are working on a wide range of projects. Professor Mohan Balasubramanian’s research will focus on Cytokinetic actomyosin ring structure, assembly and function.

Professor Balasubramanian said;

I am delighted to receive this prestigious award from the Wolfson Foundation and the Royal Society to be held at the Division of Biomedical Cell Biology, Warwick Medical School.

Warwick Medical School has developed an excellent reputation in, among others, Biomedical Cell Biology, which is my own area of research. Therefore I am delighted to join an exceptionally talented group of scientists, who work on topics ranging from single molecule studies to complex tissue dynamics. I hope to learn from these outstanding colleagues and hopefully to also contribute to their endeavours. The support from the Warwick Medical School in helping establish my group here has been excellent.

My group studies cell division using fission yeast as a model and we have recently been funded by the Wellcome Trust to further investigate our research interests. Being located in a medical school I hope I can use the knowledge gained from our studies of yeast cell division to better understand similar processes in normal and diseased human cells.
