Warwick gets ready to welcome the Games

Anticipation is building as the University of Warwick prepares to welcome more than 2,000 visitors for the 32nd Westfield Health British Transplant Games.

Organised by the charity Transplant Sport UK (TSUK), the Games will take place from Thursday 30 July until Sunday 2 August and the University will be the Games Village. More than 600 athletes and 1,500 supporters are expected and sporting events will take place at venues across Coventry.

The Games were founded to encourage transplant patients to regain fitness, and to make people aware of the need for more organ donors. In 2008, some 2,800 lives were saved or dramatically improved thanks to the generosity and courage of donors and their families. The Games aims to celebrate the gift of life and raise awareness of the remarkable impact it has on transplantees.

Lynne Holt from Transplant Sport UK said: “With just weeks to go, everyone is looking forward to the British Transplant Games to kick off, especially all the transplant athletes who have been training hard for the big weekend. Last year’s event, in Sheffield was a huge success, but it looks like the people of Coventry are behind the event one hundred percent and aim to make this year better than ever,”

Preparations are underway at the University of Warwick, and staff will be on hand throughout the weekend to man the conference facilities in use, to serve at the bars and restaurants which will be open on campus, to look after security and manage the sports facilities where many of the competitions will be taking place.

Chair of the Games Local Organising Committee and Director of Physical Education and Sport at the University, Terry Monnington said: “The University is looking forward to hosting the Games Village and all of our staff have been working hard to get everything ready. This is going to be a fantastic weekend, offering heaps of family fun, while carrying a very serious message. The aim of the Games is to inspire people to sign the NHS Donor Register and give the gift of life. It only takes a minute to sign, but can give someone a whole lifetime to enjoy.”
